On Sunday, 2 June 2013 Ladies Golf Gauteng (LGG) held Girls Love Golf Day (GLG) at Roosevelt Park – Mashie Course.  It was a lovely sunny morning and the course was in great condition since GLG played some two months ago.

GLG had 11 young ladies take part.  It was great to see the enthusiasm that they brought along with them and it was obvious from their warm-up swings and putting prior to their tee off, that they have been practicing and playing since last we met.

It was a Stableford Alliance format with Two Scores to count.  The emphasis was ‘speed of play’ and to ensure they watch their ball and walk to their next shots and to be prepared for their turn.  The coaches and parents assisting were so impressed and commended the girls on their golf etiquette, but also on how far they have come with their golf.

Congratulations to all who took part and the final scores were as follows:

The winners on 42 points – Rorisang Lebeko (10yrs), Yollan Hoffman (14yrs), Paleso Rafutho (11yrs), Tebogo Lefifi (9yrs)

·         2nd Prize on 34 points – Britney Hoffman (11yrs), Kensani Baloyi (12yrs), Liliana Uys (8yrs), Lucius Uys (7yrs) – our substitute for the day.

3rd Prize on 32 points – Vongai Chibalizeni (11yrs), Paseka Sebopa (11yrs), Ofentse Bogopane (8yrs), Louwaan Louw (7yrs)

Ladies Golf Gauteng would like to thank the following:

·      Louis and his staff at Roosevelt Park – Mashie Course and also Randpark Club for making it possible for LGG to use the course for promotintg and developing the game of golf for girls.

·      To Andy Ostle for his support and his assistant coaches Tshepo Mokoena and Mike for organizing transport and for assisting on the day.  Tshepo and Mike have worked hard with the girls in improving their golf.  Your patience and love for the game shows in your students that you coach.   Well done!

·      To the parents for their support in bringing the girls and especially for helping out on the day.

Huddle Park Golf Club

The weather was perfect for our Girls Love Golf (GLG) Day at Huddle Park, Linksfield.  The Mashie Course was in great condition and the greens were not so easy for our 12 young golfers.

The format played was a Stableford Alliance with Two Scores to count.  The fairways are quite wide with the longest hole being the only par4 at 230m and the shortest par3 at 118m.  There were not many obstacles to overcome, but it was a challenge not to be too wayward with your first shot.

The final scores were as follows:

  • The winners on 27 points – Britney Hoffman (11Yrs), Liliana Uys (8yrs), Paleso Rafutho (11yrs), Kentani Baloyi (12yrs), and our guest player A. Uys who filled in to complete the winning four ball.
  • 2nd Prize on 19 points – Ofentse Bogopane (8yrs), Rorisang Lebeko (10yrs), Tebogo Lefifi (9yrs), Paseka Sebopa (11yrs)
  • 3rd Prize on 17 points –Vongai Chibalizeni (11yrs), Juane Keulder (8yrs), Peletso Mthwembu (11yrs), Kentani Baloyi (12yrs)

Ladies Golf Gauteng (LGG) would like to thank the following:

  • Ed Retief, Mike Kletz and the Staff at Huddle Park for being great hosts and making the course available to LGG and competitors of our Girls Love Golf Day.  LGG look forward to holding future events at Huddle Park.
  • To Andy Ostle for his support and his assistant coaches Tshepo Mokoena and Mike Khumalo for their enthusiasm and encouragement of the girls on the day.
  • To the parents and supporters for bringing the girls.
  • Special Thanks to the parents who were present on the day. To Leon Keulder, Antha and Stella Uys, LGG could not have done it without you guys and the girls really do appreciate your encouragement.  THANK YOU!!

  • Congratulations to Peletso Mthwembu who has been working hard on her golf and has improved her handicap from a 24 in March to a 22 in April.

The Gauteng North Championships took place on Sunday at the Services Golf Club. Magda Kruger won the tournament on a score of 138. Bianca Lohbauer was runner up with Bianca Theron finishing in third place. Our best placed Gauteng Squad player was Kaleigh Telfer who finished in 5th place on 152 closely followed by Shawnelle de Lange on 153 in 6th place. The other girls competing finished outside the Top Ten. Woo-Ju Son (158), Ivanna Samu (159), Chiara Contomathios (160), Eleonora Galletti (160) Natasha Carlsson (162) In the B Division Megan Rosslee playing off an 11 finished with 186 and Kaiyuree Moodley off an 18 handicap had 187.

Well done to all our girls who took part.

Report by Mellett Hendrikse:

The tournament started in a light drizzle, but within half an hour perfect weather was experienced the whole day, which made for good scoring. The rough, however was quite challenging, which penalized wayward tee-shots, hence the spread in results. The greens were very good, and the course allowed the top players to rise to the top. Prize giving was concluded by 17h30, and many positive comments were received. The only withdrawal was Catherine Lau, who came down with a stomach virus. The only disappointment was the small size of the field, but next year we will make a concerted effort to get more entries from our Union, especially in the B Division.

Metropolitan Golf Club

With eight of the top ten ranked juniors playing, this promised to be an exciting Championship.   Conditions were perfect at the picturesque Metropolitan Golf Club and after Round 1, Mae Cornforth from Potchesfstroom Golf Club led the field on two under par 68 after an up and down day with five birdies and 3 drops. She was followed closely by Bianca Theron from Devonvale Golf Club who shot a solid round 69 and Ji-Sun Kang from Atlantic Beach on level 70.

Positions changed in the second round and after the front nine Bianca was level par, Ji-Sun one shot behind and Kelly Erasmus from Durbanville Golf Club two shots adrift.  Bianca pressed on to finish the tournament on two under par 138 to lift the trophy, and Ji-Sun, despite an almost flawless round could not overtake her and came in with a two over par 142.  Kelly held her nerve and finished in third place on 143.

Ji-Sun Kang, who also finished second at the Boland Junior Championships earlier in the week, won the Prentice Cup as the highest placed Western Province player.

Following on from her win at the Boland Junior Championships, Cassidy Williams from Stellenbosch Golf Club won the 10 – 18 Division with a score of 153, seven shots ahead of her nearest rival, 12 year old Crystal Beukes from Somerset West Golf Club who finished on 160.

Houghton Golf Course – Sunday, 27 November 2011

The following young ladies attended our final Girls Love Golf Tournament for 2011, which was held at Houghton Golf Course:

  • Caitlyn Mcnab (9yrs) – 26 Handicap,
  • Cara Ford (10yrs) – 29 Handicap,
  • Olivia Olsson (13yrs) – 33 Handicap,
  • Mbali (17yrs),
  • Maja Joost (8yrs),
  • Rebecca (8yrs),
  • Tshepeng Tshepeng (17yrs)

The format played was a four ball alliance with two scores to count. The first team consisted of Caithlyn Mcnab, Cara Ford, Olivia Olsson and Mbali and Maja Jost, Rebecca Sinner and Tshepeng Tshepeng made up the second team, with Caitlyn as pivot.

At first there was great anticipation and a bit of nerves with the second team as they were non-handicappers and for some it was quite a daunting task to play 18 holes.  By the time they reached the 5th tee-box, Maja, Rebecca and Tshepeng had settled in and were starting to enjoy and understand the rules and etiquette of golf.  Meanwhile our first group of golfers showed great maturity and sportsmanship as they began to tackle the course.

Congratulations to Caitlyn Mcnab carded 92/41 at the end of the day with Cara Ford 104/28 and Olivia Olsson 107/29.  It was wonderful to see how well they performed on the day as well as it was great to see the improvement in their game.  I hope that it will carry over to some of the young girls that attend the Girls Love Golf events.

The runners up were Maja, Rebecca, Tshepeng and Caitlyn (pivot) with a total of 72 points, which was a magnificent effort considering that for most it was their first event.  The team of Caitlyn, Cara, Olivia and Mbali won the day on 88 points.  Congratulations to the winners but most importantly to all our contestants for taking part and supporting Girls Love Golf.

On behalf of Ladies Golf Gauteng (Girls Love Golf), I would like to thank the managements at Houghton Golf Course and Royal Johannesburg & Kensington for their support in assisting us to develop and promote the game of golf amongst junior girls.  Thank you also to the parents who bring the players to our events and at times walk the course or caddy.  To Mrs Valda Ford, a special thank you for her assistance and support during some of our events in 2011.

To the young ladies that have taken part, especially Cara Ford, Caitlyn Mcnab and Sarah Bouch (who have attended a majority of our 2011 events), Ladies Golf Gauteng THANK YOU for coming along and bringing with you the enthusiasm to learn and play the game of golf.  To those girls that have just started I hope that you will continue to play and most importantly, please make sure that you hand your cards in so that you can begin working on your handicap.

We wish you all the best for the holidays and look forward to seeing you in 2012.

Lara wins KeNako World Junior Masters with seven birdies in her final round

Type of Result:
Result Date:
Sat 10th Mar 2012
Kingswood Golf Club

Going into the final round of the KeNako World Juniors, played at Kingswood Golf Estate his week, top SA junior Lara Weinstein was one behind the leader Boland’s Olivia le Roux.    Seven birdies later, she lifted the winner’s trophy and also the girls’ team trophy with team member Bianca Theron.

The second KeNako SA Junior Series was played this week – with a field including 35 girls and 80 boys from all parts of the world and South Africa.   With live scoring on the WJGS website and in the clubhouse, spectators and parents at home were treated to exciting final rounds with some great scoring.

In the girls’ championship, Potchefstroom’s Mae Cornforth returned the best score on day one with a two-over par 74.      In round two Olivia le Roux from Devonvale took the lead with scores of 76 and 75 and went into the final round on +7.

But the experienced Lara Weinstein having carded 78 and 74, was waiting in the wings.   Drawn in the second last group, she  started the final round with a birdie but immediately dropped at the second hole.  She dropped shots again on the sixth and seventh holes but came back with birdies at eight and nine to turn level par.    With Olivia dropping shots, Lara, now in her ‘zone’, stepped up the tempo  and never looked back .   She holed birdies at 11, 12, 15 and 16 and with pars on the final two holes, signed for 68 to win the event  on 220 - +4, eight strokes ahead of Olivia le Roux on 228.  Kelly Erasmus finished in third place  after a good final round of 73.

There were a number of good final rounds from the local girls, notably a 72 from  Carrie Park , 76 from 11-year-old Woo-Ju Son and Ji Sun Kang (all representing South Korea) and Bianca Lohbauer from Paarl.      Kim Daniels, Magda Krüger and Lauren Sobotker all carded 77.

South Africa’s Lara Weinstein and Bianca Theron won the girls’ team prize, with South Korea’s Carrie Park and Ji Sun Kang runners-up.

The boys’ championship provided the spectators with a great final round.   South Africa’s Zander Lombard led the field for the first two rounds, one stroke ahead of  Hannes Ronneblad from Sweden.

After the lead had see-sawed a couple of times, Lombard was still one stroke ahead on -5 going to 17.    But the Swede’s birdie at 17 almost ensured that a play-off was on the cards.     However, on the par three final hole, the South African’s shot landed on the upper-tier, leaving himself a difficult down-hill putt which went three meters past the pin.      Ronneblad safely two-putted up the hill for a par and Lombard missed his putt to finish runner-up.

Sweden’s Hannes Ronneblad teamed with Hampus Bergman to win the men’s team prize and South Africa’s Zander Lombard and Haydn Porteus were runners-up.

The best boy’s round of the day was returned by Zander Gous with a great 68.

The Tournament Director was South Africa's Erica Lefson.

Report from Deborah Martin

Glendower junior, Lara Weinstein, 76-72 (146), fired an even par final round 72 to lift the winner’s trophy at the Nomads WGWP Junior Championships held at Bellville Golf Club yesterday Sunday 8 January.  She is seen here receiving her trophy from Nomads Captain Kevern Pappin.

Playing in her last year as a junior, Weinstein who was four shots behind the first round leader, Zayb Kippie, had a shaky start to her final round with four bogeys in her first nine holes but managed to pick up four birdies and take the title from Imkeleen Meyer.

Only one shot separated the first six placings.

Port Elizabeth’s Meyer, who plays off a seven handicap, 73-76 (149) put up a spirited performance and led the tournament during the final round until three bogeys blew her chances of lifting the trophy and she had to settle for second spot.

In-form Bianca Theron, who lifted the Boland Junior title at her home club Kuils River earlier in the week, finished in third position a further shot behind on 74-76 (150)

Kippie, 72-79 (151) blew her four shot lead after round one with a triple bogey on the par 4, 2nd hole and had to settle for tied fourth, with Mowbray’s Sammy Barber, 75-76 (151) who had a mixed round with four birdies and four double bogeys

Bouncing back from a disappointing first round 78, Durbanville’s Kelly Erasmus carded a 2-over-par 74 (162) to tie with Tara Griebenow 76-76 (162) from Port Elizabeth.
