Ladies Golf Gauteng would like to thank Cutter and Buck for their very generous sponsorship of our teams shirts for the first day of IPT. The girls looked stunning every day of the tournament. It was announced at the 50th Anniversary IPT dinner, that WGSA had selected two girls to play at the 2nd Hexcity Albatross International Junior Golf Championship. The tournament will take place at the Classis Golf Resort in New Dehli, India, from the 30th November to 3rd December 2010. The two girls selected were Lara Weinstein of Gauteng and Izel Pieters of Mpumalanga. Well done to them both and we as Gauteng, are exceptionally proud of Lara.
The Gauteng Tigers had a brilliant day at Irene today. They took on Free State and Northern Cape. The team consisits of Jenna Schonfeld, Simone Burger, Lejan Lewthwaite, Jacqui Michler, Kirsten Campbell and Chevonne Botha. The won 2 of the 3 foursomes matches this morning and won 5 of the 6 singles matches this afternoon. It was a pleasure to watch their brilliant golf. This is a very new team, with only Jenna and Simone having played in previous Inter Provincials.
It wasn't quite the day Gauteng had hoped for today. The Lions won 2 out of 3 foursomes matches against North West, which was a great start but then only won 1 single match this afternoon, they lost the overall match against North West.
The Tigers won 1 of the 3 foursomes matches this morning and then won 3 of the 6 single matches this afternoon, which left them 1 point short of winning the overall match against Boland.
19-year old Leján Lewthwaite, playing in her first Inter-Provincial, carded a great 73 to join Protea Kim Williams at the top of the leader-board in the qualifying round played today at Irene Country Club.
The 50th Pick n Pay SA Women’s Inter-Provincial started today when 16 teams in two sections played foursomes stroke play this morning and singles this afternoon to determine the four divisions of the tournament.

Lee Ann pace has just won the S4C Wales Ladies Championship of Europe on a brilliant 6 under par. Well done Lee Anne we are all very proud of you. This win, her second of the year, places her 2nd on the European Tour Order of Merit. Lee Ann also won the Deutsche Bank Ladies Swiss Open in June. Our South African golfers are on a roll, 3 wins in 3 months from Lee Ann and Louis, proudly flying the South African flag.
The South African Junior Team of Connie Chen, Talia Nel and Lara Weinstein arrived in Belfast, Northern Ireland, yesterday to participate in the Girls British Open Amateur at Royal Belfast - a course that Erica Lefson describes as like Woodhill golf course in parklands. "It is absolutely beautiful but hilly - it is very green with lots of old trees and runs along the river and sea."
Connie Chen, Talia Nel and Lara Weinstein leave for Germany tonight to play in the Harder German Masters and then the British Junior Amateur. Lara is ranked Number 1 in Gauteng and Talia is ranked number 7. All three girls are in the top 5 Junior Golfers in South Africa, Connie is number 1 with Lara ranked 2nd and Talia is ranked 4th. We wish them all the best for their golf overseas and are sure they will gain a huge amount from this experience.
The 36-hole tournament was held at the newly redesigned Houghton Golf Club. The new Jack Nicklaus designed Signature course, proved to be an extremely tough setup for the competitors. We lengthened the course by 431m to 5588m for the A and B Division, much to the disapproval of some of the B Division players, who swore they would never play in a Gauteng Tournament again.

The A Division played off a lengthened course of 5749m, 430m longer than the ladies setup at Modderfontein. The day started off very mildly with no frost and a temperature of 5 degrees celsius and ended up being a beautiful sunny winter highveld day. The girls did not battle with the length of the course but found the greens very tricky.
Erica Lefson announced the selected SA squad at the 72 Holes Team Championships prize giving on the 26th May 2010. These girls will have the priviledge of 3 training camps at Kenako with Val Holland. Four Gauteng girls were amongst the 10 girls selected. They are Nicole Garcia, Michelle Leigh, Talia Nel and Lara Weinstein. I am sure the girls will enjoy these camps and benefit so much from them. This year Yushira Budhram and Nicole Carlse had the benefit of such camps.
The Gauteng Lions finished in 6th place in the A Division with the Gauteng Tigers finishing in 10th place in the same division. Both teams faced tough competition from Gauteng North who won the event. The Gauteng North team comprised of Kim Williams(+3) Connie Chen (+3) and Henriette Frylinck (2), they are the top 3 amateurs in South Africa. The Gauteng Leopards came 6th in the B Division which was won by a brilliant Mpumalanga team.

Kirsten Campbell, 14 years old, won the RJ&K Ladies Club Championships held over the weekend of the 15th and 16th May. Kirsten plays off a 2 handicap and has only been playing golf for just over two years. Kirsten shot a fantastic 73 on the West Course and an 82 on the much tougher East Course. Kirsten is pictured here, receiving her trophy from Graham Twaddle, the Chairman of Royal Johannesburg and Kensington.
WGSA today announced their selection for the overseas tournaments for 2010. Connie Chen(Gauteng North), Lara Weinstein(Gauteng) and Talia Nel(Gauteng) were selected to play in the Harder German Masters (3rd to 5th August) and the British Junior Amateur (9th-13th August) in Belfast, Ireland. Izel Pieters (Mpumalanga) was selected to play in the R&A Junior Open in Scotland from the 12th-14th July 2010.
Congratulations to Connie Chen on winning the SA Girls Championships this afternoon in Orkney on a brilliant 209, 7 under par through the 54 holes, runner up was Bonita Bredenhann on 211 followed by Talia Nel in 3rd place on 221. Lara Weinstein won the Girls Under 16 Championships and came 4th overall. Lora Assad came 6th and Larissa Ras finished in 10th place.
The second round of the SA Girls concluded today with Connie Chen from Centurion shooting a brilliant 5 under par 67. Connie shot a 71 yesterday (138) and is one shot in the lead from Bonita Bredenhann from Namibia. Bonita shot a 69 yesterday followed by a 70 today (139). Talia Nel from Kempton Park finished in third position today and will play in the final three ball tomorrow. Talia played a very consistent 74, 74 (148) Lara Weinstein is currently lying 4th on 149.
Nobuhle Dlamini from Swaziland won the Matchplay Championships this afternoon when she beat Yushira Budhram 4/3. Nobuhle's game was on top form, her iron play was brilliant, putting all her approach shots right on the flag. Yushira had absolutely no luck with many putts lipping out or sitting on the edge.
Marne Roos is through to the semi finals after winning her match against Kim Williams. Yushira Budhram, Alana Van Greuning and Nobuhle Dlamini are also through to the semi finals. Marne Roos will play against Yushira Budhram tomorrow morning, Nobuhle Dlamini will take on Alana Van Greuning. In the A Division Flight Kirsten Campbell will take on Marike Reynecke and Lejan Lewthwaite will take on Stephanie Perkins.
Kim Williams played very steady golf today to win the Proshop Gauteng Amateur Strokeplay Championships, she carded a 71 this morning and a 75 this afternoon. The day started off very gloomy with light rain early this morning. The rain had stopped by the time the girls teed off on the lengthened Woodmead Course at The Country Club Johannesburg a Par 72 layout with a course rating of 73 for the Tournament.
President of Ladies Golf Gauteng, Les Rule, announced the teams to represent Gauteng at the 72 Holes Teams Championships to be held at Gracelands from the 23rd May - 26th May 2010. The teams will be accompanied by their President and 2 managers Gill Van Der Meulen and Imera Astell. The teams shall be as follows:- The Lions will be Nicole Garcia, Michele Leigh and Lara Weinstein.
The Tigers will be Lauren Bekker, Yushira Budhram and Jenna Schonfeld.
Kim Williams completed the double by winning the SA Amateur Matchplay. She beat Bonita Bredenhann from Namibia 6/5. Bertine Strauss beat Nicole Garcia 6/5 in the plate event. Steph Perkins and Amy Henning won the 2 A Division flights and the B Division was won by Maryka Short. Full results attached.
The first and second round of the matchplay took place today. Gautengs top players qualified in the Championship division. Nicole Carlse won her match by beating Nobuhle Dlamini 4/3, defending Champion. Michelle Leigh beat Emma-Jo de Bruyn 4/2, Lauren Bekker beat Kirsten Campbell 4/3,Lara Weinstein beat Bertine Strauss 3/2. Nicole Garcia lost to Eugenie Clack 2/1, Talia Nel lost to Henriette Frylinck 6/4 and Yushira Budhram lost to Connie Chen 6/5.
Gauteng's Kirsten Campbell, a member at RJ&K, was selected by WGSA, along with Connie Chen from Gauteng North, to represent South Africa in the Jakarta Teams Junior Championships. Kirsten and Connie will be chaperoned by Erica Lefson, President WGSA. Kirsten is 14 years old and will play in the 13-14 age group, Connie is 17 and will play in the 15-17 age group category. They leave on the 28th May.
The 54 holes SA Amateur Strokeplay concluded today, with Kim Williams winning on a brilliant 2 under par. Kim Williams, Lara Weinstein and Connie Chen were in the final 3 ball today after finishing the 36 holes on level par. Henriette Frylinck finished on +2, Lara, Connie and Bonita all finished on +3. The matchplay rounds start tomorrow morning and will conclude with a 36 holes final on Friday.
Connie Chen carded the low round on day two of the Sanlam SA Women’s Amateur when she signed for a one-under-par 71 to tie with Lara Weinstein and Kim Williams on 144. This should make for an exciting final round on the final day of the stroke play championship tomorrow at Port Elizabeth golf course, fondly known as The Hill.
The first round of the Sanlam SA Amateur 54 Hole Championships took place today at Port Elizabeth Golf Club. The conditions today were superb, there was lots of sun, no rain and absolutely no wind which is quite unheard of for PE .This was a huge turnaround after the 60km/h winds experienced on Friday. Kim Williams is leading the tournament on 69 with Tiffany Avern-Taplin lying second on 70.
The girls had to deal with really tough conditions today when the wind got up to 60km/h at Port Elizabeth Golf Club today during their practice round.We are hoping for calmer weather tomorrow and maybe some more planes can land today!!! Several had to be diverted due to the gale force winds. The Sanlam Amateur starts on Sunday 11th April.
Well done to all the Gauteng Juniors who took part in the Rose Bowl over the weekend. We had 8 "A" Division Girls and 7 "B" Division Girls who took part in this 54 Hole Strokeplay event played at Kloof Country Club from the 28th to 30th March 2010. Lara Weinstein finished 4th on 222, 5 shots off the pace from Winner Izel Pieters. Izel won the play off after finishing tied with Bonita Bredenhann on 217. Talia Nel finished 6th on 226, Kirsten Campbell was tied for 10th on 234.
The South African Golf Association (SAGA) announced on the 5th March 2010, that we would revert back to one handicap on the 1st April 2010.The use of a single handicap for all formats of play will come into effect on the 1st April 2010. The competition allowance will now be defunct and all Alliance and Betterball competitions will be played off the full handicap, the higher of your previous two eg.
The League Rules have been amended in accordance with the handicap change that is taking place as from 1 April 2010 and are available under the tab 'League'. Please ensure that all league players are aware of these changes. As from 1 April 2010 all league games are to be played with the 'new' handicap.
The Pam Golding Western Province Championships were won by Bonnita Bredenhan on 144, Kim Williams and Yvette du Plessis finished tied for second place, two shots behind on 146. Talia Nel was our best placed Gauteng player, she finished 3rd on a 147 closely followed by Yushira Budhram in 4th place on 148. Nicole Garcia finished tied 6th on 151 and Kirsten Campbell finished on 152 and was tied for 7th place. Nicole Carlse, Jenna Schonfeld and Lara Weinstein made the top ten.
This was updated today as the Mpumalanga Championships have changed their date and the venue has been confirmed as Nelspruit Golf Club.
The SAGA Handicapping and Course Rating Committee has decided that as from 1 April 2010 the SAGA will discontinue with the Handicap Allowance. Therefore for those competition formats that previously required 75% of handicap to be used (being the Allowance), will now be played using the handicap only. The basic handicap computation is 100% of the average of the best ten of the last twenty rounds.
Congratulations to Yushira Budhram on passing her drivers licence today, well done and on the first attempt too. We will not only be seeing her driving on the fairways, but on the roads as well. Be safe and watch out for all those idiots out there, believe me there are plenty on our roads these days.
Gauteng Girls were very well represented in the recent Eastern Cape Championships, held at Port Elizabeth Golf Club, a Par 74 layout. The course was very dry as a result of the drought in the area. I wish we could send them some of our rain and water from our water logged courses.
